Queering Tradition

“Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as… as… as a fiddler on the roof!”

We live in a post-Fiddler-on-the-Roof age. No longer must we be bound by the gender roles that make up the bulk of Tevye the milkman’s song. We invent our marriages and partnerships every day, whether we are part of the LGBTQ community or not. We revise, reconstruct, and remake traditions every day. And we validate those traditions in front of our friends, families–whether of origin or by choice–and communities.

Whether we are marrying under our great-grandfather’s tallit, jumping the broom, performing a drag show, taking communion, or posing with leader’s in LGBTQ justice movements, we draw on the past to move beyond the present. Queer theorist José Esteban Muñoz writes in his book Cruising Utopia, “Queerness is a longing that propels us forward.” We are cruising utopia, we are meeting face-to-face, we are letting the facts of love propel us forward, but not without a rudder.

Kelly's aesthetic is much like her disposition- bright, sunny and full of love. She will do [just about] anything for a great photo and always captures those perfect, tiny moments you didn't even know we're there.

As the dancing subsided from during our wedding, Kelly grabbed us to take pictures with the sunset. We kicked off our shoes and walked down the breakwater at Lighthouse Point, occasionally wading in the surf. To get these shots, Kelly hiked up her dress and marched into the sea, risking the waves toppling her, ruining her dress, and destroying her expensive camera equipment. She did all of this while a roving band of five year olds threw pebbles at her. If this does not convince you that Kelly is the greatest photographer ever, you don't deserve her :)

Client Love

"Kelly captured some of the most amazing moments that are *so perfect* for us to cherish. They show me being silly and Janet being sweet; and that's us. By the end of the night, I was ready to pack Kelly and Natalie in our bags and haul them with us to Hawaii and then back to Atlanta!"
