APW Yay New York

A Practical Wedding is a blog that is very near and dear to my heart. A good chunk of my clients read the blog and love just as much as I do. It’s the only place I advertise (besides my own site, So You’re EnGAYged) because I believe in it that much.

So when NY finally voted and passed same-sex marriages, Meg, the founder of APW decided it was time to throw a celebration, help a few couples get legally married, and give back to the LGBT community as well by raising money for Lambda Legal.

And all the sudden, before I know it, we are less than a week away from this amazing adventure. So if you’re in the NYC area, grab your tickets, support an amazing cause, and freaking have some fun!

Taken from APW:

Free Weddings: Two Marriages, One Universal Right

In the morning of August 25, 2011, A Practical Wedding and Lowe House Events will be throwing two free daytime weddings for couples who were selected through an application process. The weddings given away for Two Marriages, One Universal Right will take place on a beautiful fourteenth floor terrace with a city view with a legal officiant. The Terrace will also play host to flowers, cake and bubbly, plus room for friends and loved ones, as well as professional photographers. With lovely invitations designed by And Kathleen.

Dance Party: Yay New York!
Then, on the evening of August 25th, Yay New York! A Mass Reception to Celebrate Marriage Equality will be held in the same mid-town Manhattan space and is open to the public. DJ Whitney Day, an up-and-coming DJ in NYC’s LGBTQ nightlife scene, will be spinning. Decorations will include Confetti System pinatas, andMonogamy Wine will be flowing freely from the open bar. A dance-your-face-off celebration, Yay New York! is a party for everyone who wants to celebrate this historic moment in civil rights in style.

The Fundraiser

Because the organizers think that the best way to celebrate New York’s Marriage Equality Law is to help raise money to bring equality to other states as well, all attendees will be asked to make a suggested $40 tax-deductible donation to Lambda Legal at the door in an effort to raise $10,000 for the organization. Lambda Legal was chosen as the charity recipient because of their longstanding commitment to “achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work.”

The Tote Bags

To allow people who can’t attend the celebration to help support the event, we’re offering limited edition tote bags, for sale for just $20. They feature the Yay New York logo, a simple and evocative symbol of marriage equality. That and they’re super stylish. Get them before they are gone.
