On my website, I tell people that if they hire me, they get a a photographer for life. And I really mean that. So I was pee-my-pants-excited when Nashama and Andrea called me. Do you remember Nashama and Andrea? I shot their engagement and wedding three years ago, and I’d been following their adventures since. Both women are veterinarians and had been moving around a lot as they worked on completing more specialized training. And I knew in the process they’d had a baby boy. I’d seen pictures on facebook, and he was just so painfully cute, I was sad that they were living so far away.
But then I get this call, and guess what? Andrea, Nashama, and Henry are back in the northeast and wanting some pictures in honor of Henry’s first birthday. Of course, I jumped at the chance. We met up at one of my favorite locations, Lighthouse Point Park, for some fun on the swings and in the sand.
One year old’s are kind of perfect. They’re still babies, so they’re not self-conscious in front of the camera at all. But they’re also totally aware of what’s going on around them, which makes them curious and expressive.
Photographing LGBT families is also perfect for me. First off, it’s such a blessing to get to see families grow as Andrea and Nashama’s has since they time I shot them with their two dogs in Roger Williams Park (the dogs came to Henry’s shoot by the way!). But also, there just aren’t enough images yet of LGBT people creating families, and I view my wedding photography as one drop in the bucket of remedying that. And so was my shoot with Henry.
How cute is Henry’s crown? Nashama made it for his first birthday party, and it was just too cute not to photograph.
I think we all should have swimming trunks as cute as Henry’s.
